The existing clubhouse at Muirfield Village was 38 years old and required a major transformation to fit modern function while maintaining the character of the country club’s aesthetics. Substantial architectural changes included the addition of a clock tower and a three-level building connecting the clubhouse to the Pavilion. This building provided panoramic views of the 9th, 10th and 18th holes from the six suites within the building.
A 15,000-square-foot addition to the clubhouse was added and consisted of a covered outdoor dining area overlooking the 18th green. A Mixed Grill and private wine room replaced the club’s formal dining area. A new 6,000-square-foot fitness center and locker rooms completed the project.
Jack Nicklaus, the club founder, and his wife Barbara were very involved in the design changes. Mr. Nicklaus was adamant about offering unobstructed views of the golf course from the clubhouse. His architect Robert Acree mentioned that Nicklaus’ comment was, “Why do you always put wood right in the middle of my views?”
To deliver this unobstructed view, a two-door unit needed to transform into a single picture unit. To do this, JELD-WEN removed the meeting stiles, making the Aurora door into a window. Every Aurora product constructed was custom manufactured to meet the sizes. Lamination, assembly and net sizing were completed offline.
The windows and doors featured at the front of the clubhouse were Aurora. Siteline windows were used in the suites.
The renovations and addition were unveiled at the 2013 Memorial Tournament.
