When Rick and Connie Voth decided to build on the verdant two-acre wooded property in the heart of Cajun Country in Lafayette, they opted to renovate the original 150-year old former sharecropper’s cottage that had been moved to the site a half-century ago. Preserving the historic structure was extremely important to the homeowners and crucial to the project team who brought back some of its original Cajun style and also designed and built a substantial addition around it.
This extensive renovation showcases a mélange of details, including some Acadian elements such as the pitched roof and French doors. JELD-WEN’s Custom Wood Windows in the simulated French casement style and nesting crank hardware are a nod to European design influence. These windows are easy to open and echo the operation of French doors.
The Voth residence is true to its own eclectic style; it embraces comfort on an impressive sense of scale. The home’s vast, rambling, lodge-inspired design is unified by the large JELD-WEN windows working in harmony with other elements, such as 12” wide floor planks, cathedral ceilings, large exposed beams, warm wood tones and many different elevations.
With its 500 feet of river frontage views, the home affords many opportunities for window placement. The 4’x9’ JELD-WEN Custom Wood Windows with 24” transoms are of paramount importance in providing natural illumination and lush views of the Vermillion River and surrounding landscape. JELD-WEN’s ability to produce windows of this size was exactly what the builder needed. And, because they’re made with JELD-WEN’s proprietary AuraLast® Wood, they’re guaranteed against wood rot—a necessity in the humid Louisiana climate.
The home’s floorplan is resistant to “stacking,” or building rooms back-to-back. Because the rooms are not stacked, most of the windows illuminate rooms from two or more directions which create a feeling of living within the scenery.
Building Designer Mike Landry likens windows to the “eyes of a structure.” JELD-WEN’s Custom Wood Windows with Natural Pine interior finish and Ivory exterior cladding are the “pretty eyes” on the Voth residence that Landry was looking for. When viewed from the outside, the windows help tie together the looks of the renovated house and the new construction to achieve the look of one cohesive home.
Looking inside out, windows, like art, frame the landscape.
“All art has proper proportion,” noted Landry. “All picture frames have proportion. Windows have to be art on walls.”
