The lush southern surroundings of the Thompson home provide a beautiful setting, yet because of Louisiana’s high humidity and rainfall, wood rot is a common malady. (see video)

Project Challenge

The Thompson residence is one of 38 custom homes built by Mike Thompson in River Ranch, a traditional neighborhood design community with a population of about 7,000. Situated on a prominent site in River Ranch with manmade lakes behind the property, the Thompson home has luxuriant views from every room. The lush southern surroundings provide a beautiful setting, yet because of Louisiana’s high humidity and rainfall, wood rot is a common malady. The superior technology that AuraLast® Wood provides makes it a perfect choice for building a home in this challenging climate.

Architectural Solution

With its neo-classical symmetry, arches, iconic tall columns and pediments, the Thompson residence is stately in appearance. The floor plan is an “upside down” style with bedrooms on the main floor and large living, dining and kitchen areas on the second floor in order to take advantage of gorgeous views. The high ceilings and large Siteline EX Clad-Wood Windows and matching transoms allow for views of the lavish greenery and meandering water feature. Though the residence is located within a neighborhood, the location feels spacious and private.

In the sweltering Louisiana climate, windows are all about light and views, not ventilation, since central cooling is the norm. Most rooms allow natural light to enter on three sides.

“We live with natural light,” said homeowner and builder Mike Thompson. JELD-WEN not only offers designs that complement the house, but also offers them in the sizes and configurations that that the architect sought. Custom mouldings trim the interior and suit the many traditional Louisiana elements, such as exposed beams made from reclaimed cypress, which give the place character.

While the home’s style is traditional, the windows are thoroughly modern in terms of their technology. JELD-WEN Siteline EX Wood Windows with argon-filled insulated glass admit less heat, making the home more energy efficient by keeping heat outside. The extruded exterior aluminum cladding in Chestnut Bronze requires minimal maintenance and is visually complementary to the stucco exterior. Last, but not least, AuraLast Wood provides these state-of-the-art windows with an impressive 20-year guarantee against rot—an important consideration for homebuilding in a humid climate.
